Hello week 7 and hello family time! My family has been wanting to be wine connoisseur’s for years and they are getting closer and closer. This weekend I had the privilege to go home to Arizona for some needed family time and why not do my homework as family event, right? Instead of a normal wine and cheese paring we decided to make it a taste and guessing test. We have four bottles of wine that we have never tried before and we had the description printed out. After tasting the wines, we would discuss what we tasted and see what description it matched and at the end we would make the correct bottle with the description.

We had four different Cabernet Sauvignon’s which included: Wente, Liberty School, Joel Gott, and a Louis M Martin. The three cheeses we chose to pair included: pictured is a menchego, a merlot-soaked parmesan, and comte. Along with the cheese we paired a peppered salami and that was my favorite pairing. My mother didn’t present all of the cheeses on the same pretty platter and I forgot to get a closer picture of the other cheeses, but I did take a picture of the full dining table. Also included in the table picture is my family. My mother, father, brother, aunt Janie, Uncle Mike, and my cousin Danielle. I am not a red wine gal, but it never hurts to try and it’s safe to say red wines specifically Cabernet Sauvignon’s are not my all-time favorite, but I can drink a few glasses of it. All of the wines were similar in color with a deep red/burgundy color. My favorite wine out of the four was the Wente. When I had my first taste, I tasted oak, cherries, and maybe plums. After making my guess and then reading the real description it had tastes of cherry, rose, violet and cedar ripe. I enjoyed pairing this wine with the comte because I feel that the cheese cut the acidity of the wine and brought out more underlying flavors. The Louis M Martin was an odd wine. I tasted dark fruits like plum and cherry and in fact the description included dark berries, gravel and cedar. In my experience I don’t know what gravel tastes like, but it was semi earthy. To me the merlot-soaked parmesan was best with this wine because I think it brought out softer flavors and took away the ‘gravel’ taste. The third wine was the Joel Gott. When i smelt the wine and after my first taste I got hints of chocolate, and it seemed dry. The description stated that the wine has hints of mocha, black currant and blackberry. I enjoyed this wine with the menchego because it made the mocha pop out more to me. The final and fourth wine was the Liberty School. To me it tasted of chocolate and it was tangy with lots of fruit. The real description included black cherry, plum, and strawberry. This pairing was so enjoyable because of my family, and seeing how the cheese brought out different flavors in the wine.
